its a really good article but the comments at the bottom are more incisive: politicizing the sangha is a transformation into an organisation challenging the state which is detrimental to the religious order but its true purpose in life is to give moral direction to the leadership and the people. but i think this has taken place because there are no legal pathways to dialogue or political struggle

Sounds dodgy. To be cautiously optimistic... Keep the politicians away if you want to accomplish something positive and meaningful. They have proved millions of time that They are the problem.

also if you want to blame oil for the worlds suffering it doesnt make sense because we are in iraq and of course they have alot of oil reserves thats common knowledge. if we invaded for oil and profit wouldnt we have invaded sudan first? they have lots of fossil fuels there.thinking about sudan makes me sad because what i see there is a holocaust ... See Morehappening all over and another world turning a blind eye like they did b4 WWII. another thing in defense of petroleum most people wouldnt be so quick to ... See Moreshoot down petroleum companies if they knew the ammount of things that are created using petroleum, look it up its alot of things. also its human nature to be greedy and jealous to certain point its ok to have a little greed and jealousy its what makes the world turn but there is also the point where you start causing harm and destruction to other people. the only way there will be lasting peace in the world is if everyone is educated and understands that peace is more profitable to all people. i also agree with andrew cheyne. also its easy to be a pacifist when you are an observer to suffering but i can tell you if i was one of these people who was truly suffering in the world i would want someone to do something even if it meant killing the people causing the suffering. PEACE TO ALL

A birthday message for Dr. Cynthia Maung on behalf of the Free Burma Campaign (South Africa)(FBC(SA)

A fiftieth birthday in anyone's life is a time for reflection on that particular life.
But it is very seldom that the life lived so far is so great that it causes others to look back and reflect on their lives. But more so such a great life serves to inspire others in their lives and so plant the seeds of other... See More
great lives.

Dr. Cynthia is a doctor who over the last twenty years has cared for some of the poorest and most oppressed people in the world; she is also a teacher; a teacher of tireless selflessness. She is truly a teacher of humanity.

We enthusiastically salute Dr. Cynthia on her birthday and wish her many, many happy returns.

For what would the world be without people like her?
Freedom for the Karen! Freedom for Burma!

Yours sincerely, David P. Kramer, FBC(SA).

Like I said Amanda I was quite surprised at the number of people who were prepared to criticize the government and to discuss the difference between the names of Burma and Myanmar. Most of these criticisms were general, focusing on things such as the imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi and monks who had been accused of crimes against the government. ... See MoreAlthough I didn’t initiate these conversations I was prepared to listen and learn. I would be interested to hear other people’s experiences of this particular point?
