I really liked Avatar and I think it's innovative, but alas, that puts me in the minority here. But, c'mon, The Matrix didn't have wooden writing and cliches? Also, regarding this criticism about the story's realism: why would a nation with incredible technological ingenuity invade a people by brute force without even understanding them? Iraq.

Wow. "Precious" really dropped off the map. I guess. I thought it was one of the best of the year. Ah well.

I'm glad "Adventureland" was remembered. I'm not sure if Liam Neeson's "Taken" was this year, but that was a surprisingly intense action flick. "Zombieland" was pretty entertaining, and of course, "Up," "Up in the Air," "Avatar," and "Inglorious Basterds."

I've got a lot of catching up to do, movie-wise.

I don't actually see all that many films these days, so seeing a remake of one I've already seen isn't attractive unless it's really an improvement. Plus I almost always like Scandinavian films more than US ones.

Filmspotting From AK - Check out Ballgame getting some love over on Slate: "Matty Robinson, a co-host of the excellent movie podcast Filmspotting, likes to say of an underrated performance, "I don't want to see his Hamlet, but [X] is not bad in this role." You don't want to see Kristen Stewart's Hamlet—and based on a few lines Ed r...eads aloud in an English-class scene, you really
don't want to see Robert Pattinson's Romeo—but both actors are ideally
suited to their roles as pining sweethearts separated only by the fact
that one lacks an eternal soul." http://www.slate.com/id/2236144/

Sometimes a critic's aesthetic judgment is impossible to extricate from what you might call her cinematic libido. There are movies that bring us a pleasure that's neither definable nor defensible. These used to be called "guilty pleasures," but that phrase
