If there are any other developers currently listed on your application you'll need to ask them to add you as developer from the application's "Edit Settings" page.

If there are no longer any developers listed on your application, we can only restore applications to the account that originally created them and where there is currently no listed developer. If your account is the original creator and there are no other listed developers on the application, please fill out the developer help form and provide the application IDs of the applications you would like to re-claim as well as the user ID of your Facebook account.

If you click on the "Create Your Profile" button and fill out the additional information, you will create a personal account to correspond with your business account. Once this final registration step is complete, these changes cannot be reverted. Deactivating your personal account will cause you to loose access to any Pages and Social Ads you've created.

After you have created a personal account, you can manage all the Pages and Socials Ads you’ve created by selecting "Ads and Pages" from the Applications menu, which is located on the bottom right side of your home page. The fans of your Pages will not be able to view or access to your personal profile. Any actions that you take as a Page administrator on your Page will show the Page’s name as the actor and not your personal name. However, if you wish to restrict your privacy so that other Facebook members cannot find you in search or add you as a friend, you can do so by clicking on "privacy" at the top any Facebook page.

When users post content to an open forum on the site (i.e., Facebook Pages, the "Questions and Answers from Users" section of the Help Center, "Open" Groups), this material may also be indexed by search engines.

Unfortunately, Facebook does not have control over content that has already been indexed and cached in search engines. Doing so will render the link that appears in search engine results invalid.

Please keep in mind that you will see a different set of options than other users when searching for your account or viewing your profile. Since you cannot add yourself as a friend, the "Add to Friends" link will not appear. You will also always be able to see the links for "View Profile," "Send Message," and "View Friends" when you find your own account, but these options may not be available to every other user. Also, please remember that although you will never see the option to message or poke yourself on your own Profile page, other users will see this option.

If you have adjusted your Search settings on the Privacy page, these changes will be reflected properly when other users search for your profile.

If you have a specific question, try searching the Help Center first. For example, search profile photo in the Help Center's search field above if you want to learn how to change your profile photo.

If you want to browse by topic, click on the most relevant subject and then select the relevant subtopic. For example, if you'd like to learn more about privacy settings, first click Privacy, then click Privacy settings and fundamentals. If you want to report a bug (or want to see if the issue you're experiencing is a bug), click Troubleshooting instead.

When you enter a search on Facebook, you will land in the "All Results" filter by default. This filter includes all of the most relevant content from Facebook in addition to the web. To refine your search, select a filter from the menu on the left side of the search results page. Selecting one of these filters will display search results exclusively from that filter, and will also give you the option to narrow your search even more.

Search filters include:
  • People: helps you find people you know on Facebook. To narrow your people search, just type a location, school, or workplace in the appropriate field and click the "Refine Search" button.
  • Pages: helps you find Pages that interest you on Facebook. To narrow your Pages search, select a Page type from the drop-down menu at the top of your search results.
  • Groups: helps you find groups on Facebook that are related to your search. Groups that can be seen by everyone are viewable in search results; secret groups are not viewable in search results. To further refine your groups search, select a group type from the drop-down menu at the top of your search results.
  • Applications: helps you find applications by outside developers that interest you.
  • Events: helps you find events on Facebook that are related to your search. Events that can be seen by everyone are viewable in search results; secret events are not viewable in search results. To narrow your events search, select a date and/or event type from the drop-down menus at the top of your search results.
  • Web Results: helps you find relevant web information outside of Facebook that is related to your search.
  • Posts by Friends: helps you find status updates and other content your friends have posted that are related to your search. To narrow your search, select a post type from the drop-down menu at the top of your search results.
  • Posts by Everyone: helps you find status updates and other content from anyone who enables their posts to be viewed by people other than friends. To narrow your search, select a language and/or post type from the drop-down menus at the top of your search results.

Search is a powerful tool for finding out what people on Facebook think about the world around them. Search for your favorite band to see thoughts about their new album or for a political leader to read reactions to a recent speech.

Facebook created public search listings in 2007 to enable your friends to find you off of Facebook. When people search for you through a public search engine (eg, Google or Bing), they may see your public search listing. Your public search listing includes publicly available information (your name, profile picture, current city, gender, networks, friend list and pages). Please note that your Friend List will only appear in your public search listing if you allow Everyone to view this information.

In addition, any other information that you have made available to everyone using the Everyone privacy setting can be accessed by public search engines.

Your public search listing will only be available if you have the "Allow Indexing" box checked on the Search section of the Privacy Settings page. If you uncheck this box, people who do not yet use Facebook won’t be able to find you. Allowing your friends to find you both on and off of Facebook may make your experience more meaningful.

On the following page, please make sure that you have selected "Everyone" for your search visibility and that you have checked the box next to "Create a public search listing for me and submit it for search engine indexing." Keep in mind that once you’ve changed your settings on Facebook, there may be a delay until the external search directory updates. To request an immediate change, you will have to contact the search engine in question.

Please keep in mind that once you have changed your settings on Facebook, there may be a delay until the external search directory updates. During this time period, your public search listing link may appear in an external search engine result, but users will be unable to actually view the public search listing. However, this information may still be saved in the search engine’s cache or search memory. Unfortunately, Facebook does not have control over content that has already been indexed and cached in search engines. To request the immediate removal of this search listing, you will have to contact the specific search engine’s support team.

Yes; however, no additional information is shared outside of what is already publicly available. Facebook Search allows you to search for anything on the site, including people in other networks, provided they haven't restricted their privacy settings. From the Search page, just type the individual's name into the search field. Once the results have been generated, you can use the filters on the left side of the page to narrow your search results by result type (e.g., People, Pages, Groups). Selecting the "People" filter will further allow you to filter your results by affiliations (e.g., Location, School, Workplace).

You can also use the special Classmate Search and Coworker Search to find people you know from the school or workplace to which you belong. Classmate Search allows you to search for people that attended a specific high school or college. You can search a specific school, or specify a class year to narrow down your results. Coworker Search lets you search for people based on what companies they worked at according to their profiles.

Suggestions is a feature that helps you connect with people and Pages you are likely to know, as well as engage with your confirmed friends on Facebook. Facebook calculates Suggestions based on the networks you are a part of, mutual friends, work and education information, contacts imported using the Friend Finder, and many other factors.

Since this feature is automatic, it occasionally identifies people that you do not know or do not want to be friends with. Please keep in mind that Facebook will never send friend requests to the users that show up in this list.

Please report this information here so that we can memorialize this person’s account. Memorializing the account removes certain more sensitive information like status updates and restricts profile access to confirmed friends only. We do honor requests from close family members to close the account completely.

Privacy: Update to settings

Some settings are changing with the recent updates to Facebook privacy...
Some settings are changing with the recent updates to Facebook privacy, but Facebook’s commitment to providing you control over your information is not. Here’s a summary of what’s changing:
  • The Privacy page has been simplified, and in that process, some settings have been consolidated.
  • A privacy control has been added to the publisher at the top of your home and profile page. This allows you to set privacy on individual posts. For example, you could post a status to Everyone or only to Friends. Learn more on the Publisher help page.
  • Instead of having networks for regions (eg., Australia or New York City), people’s locations are now listed in the "Current City" or "Current Region" field of their profiles. This means if you use the "Friends and Networks" privacy setting, the networks part only applies to work and school networks.
  • A basic set of information is publicly available, meaning it’s visible to anyone that’s able to navigate to your profile, applications you use on Facebook, and websites you connect with via Facebook. This information includes your name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, friend list, and Pages. Any additional information (eg., photos or videos) will only be exposed if your privacy settings allow it.

Keep in mind that anyone who navigates to your profile will be able to view your publicly available information and information you’ve made visible to Everyone. While you do have the option to hide your Friend List from being visible on your profile, it will be available to applications you use and websites you connect with using Facebook. In addition, your profile picture appears in places you make comments and posts. You can always change your current profile picture or lower your search visibility if you choose.

While you can restrict the visibility of an email address on your profile, there is no way to prevent individuals from locating you on the site via an email address attached to your account. However, you can adjust your email address preference from the Account Settings page, if you would prefer to operate your account under a different email address (one which you would not mind be located through on the site).

You can use Friend Lists to create different privacy levels for different groups of your friends. This allows you to selectively open more of your profile to the people closest to you. From the Profile Information section of your Privacy Settings page, clicking "Customize" will open a field for "Hide this from these people." Adding a friend or Friend List name here will hide the information in question from these people when they view your profile.

If you add a user to more than one Friend List, and those Friend Lists have conflicting privacy settings, the more restrictive of the privacy settings will always be respected.

If you enter three or more friends as an exception, you’ll have the option to create a new Friend List to group these people. You can create, edit and delete Friend Lists from your Friends page.

What type of network are you trying to add?

A work network:
Please note that if your company does not distribute official email addresses to employees, we will be unable to create a workplace network for you.

If you have a work email address that has the company domain, please click this link.

If you’re not receiving the confirmation email, please check your email application's spam or junk folder or filter.
A college network:
In order to join one of our college networks, you need to have a valid email address from one of the schools we support. This email account needs to be set up to send or receive external emails. To accommodate alumni, we accept school affiliated alumni email addresses, which are available at many schools (often for free) through their school or alumni association.

If your school does not provide you with an email address, you will not be able to join that network at this time.

If you have an email address from your school, but aren’t able to receive the confirmation email, please check your spam and junk-related folders and filters.

If you’re still unable to add a college network, please click here.

If you cannot add your college or university because it is not supported, please click on this link.
A high school network:
If you do not have an option to add a high school network to your account, then you may be ineligible to register with a high school at this time. If you currently attend high school and are between the ages of 13 and 18 but have not provided this information accurately, please use the link at the bottom to contact us – we’ll then be able to update your account. If you are over the age of 18, you will need to add your high school information to the Education section of your Profile, as you are no longer eligible to add a high school network. Note that people will still be able to find you in a Classmates Search.

If you are unable to add your high school network because you have recently switched high school networks, you may need to wait until the block expires before adding a new high school. If you are registered in a high school that you do not currently attend, please use the form below to contact us – we’ll then be able to update your account.

If you are unable to add your high school network because we do not support your high school, we can help to add the network to Facebook. Please click here to contact us with your high school information.

You can join multiple networks, but you will have to choose one to be your primary network. Your primary network should be whichever network you feel most connected with. Note that your primary network will appear next to your name, and will influence which search results you see first. For example, if you belong to the NYU network and the Harvard network, and select NYU as your primary network, your name will appear as John Smith (NYU) to other users. Similarly, when you search for something, results from NYU will appear first, followed by results from the Harvard network, and then from other networks.

Friend connections on Facebook must be confirmed by both users involved. This happens through an initial friend request or invitation to join the site and a confirmation of the request by the recipient. It is not technically possible to become friends with someone without this confirmation.

A friend request can be sent manually or through features like Friend Finder and Classmate/Co-worker Search.

When using these features, please be aware that multiple friend requests and invitations can be sent simultaneously. If a user signs up through these invitations, they will automatically be added to your Friend List.

You can submit a name change request through the "Name" section of your Account Settings page. Please note that Facebook reviews each name change request that is submitted. Due to the volume of requests we receive, your request may not be processed immediately.

Please note that Facebook account names must adhere to the following authenticity standards:
  • Your full first and last name must be listed. Nicknames can be listed if they are a variation of your first or last name, but only in the format "First Name ‘Nickname’ Lastname."
  • Accounts are for personal use only. To represent a celebrity, business or brand, please create a Facebook Page. Pages are for representing a real public figure, artist, brand or organization, and may only be created by an official representative of that entity. For more information about Facebook Pages, please click here.
  • Professional and religious titles are not allowed in account names.
  • You can list your maiden name as your alternate name on the Account Settings page. Please note that account names that include "was," "nee" and "formerly" are not allowed.
  • Accounts can represent one person only. Accounts representing groups, families or couples are not allowed.

Facebook reviews every name change request before it is approved. If your name change request is rejected, it could be because our systems have mistakenly prevented the change. If your real, full first and last name has been rejected, you can submit your request for further review by clicking here.

There are three ways to block someone:
  1. Go to the Privacy Settings page and click "Block List." Enter the name or email address of the person you want to block in the appropriate field and click "Block."
  2. If you cannot find someone using the Person search field, try going to their profile page. You can block them by navigating to the "Report this Person" link at the bottom of their profile page. Once you click this link, check the "Block this person" box and then click "Submit."
  3. Lastly, please note that you can block someone through the "Report" link located next to messages in your Inbox.
People will not be notified when you block them. If you are unable to block someone using any of the methods listed above, it is possible that they have left Facebook or have restricted their privacy settings.

If you cannot block someone and would like to prevent them from viewing your profile, you can adjust your Privacy Settings accordingly. For more information on editing your Privacy Settings, click here.

We want Facebook to remain an environment where people can connect and share comfortably. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of any new technology to harass or intimidate someone and is considered to be abusive behavior from minor to minor, while cyberharassment typically involves adults. There are steps you can take to prevent this kind of behavior if it occurs.

Accept Friend Requests Safely

In order to prevent harassment from strangers, be careful to accept friend requests only from people you know in real life. Also, remember to report any messages or profiles that look suspicious. Facebook is based on a real-name culture, and fake profiles are regularly disabled when they're reported to us. Please also keep in mind that only confirmed friends can post to your Wall or contact you via Facebook Chat, so if you're worried that someone will make inappropriate posts or send offensive messages, just ignore that person's friend request.

Use the "Block" Feature to Stop Abusive Behavior

A block prevents specific people from viewing your profile. When you block people, any ties you currently have with them will be broken, and these people won't be able to contact you through Facebook. If you receive inappropriate or abusive communication, you can block the person by listing his or her name in the "Block People" box at the bottom of your Privacy Settings page. You can visit this page at any time by hovering your mouse over the "Settings" link at the top of any Facebook page and selecting the "Privacy Settings" option from the drop-down menu that appears.

Report Abusive Behavior Directly to Facebook

The most efficient way to report abuse is to do it in the same place it occurs on Facebook. For example, if you receive a harassing message in your Inbox, you can report the message by clicking on the "Report" link next to the sender's name as you are reading the message. If you receive a harassing message from a person who is a Facebook friend of yours, you should remove the person as a friend and report the message. Reporting the message as harassing will automatically add this person to your Block list. You can also use the "Report/Block person" link that appears at the bottom of the abusive user's profile. If you learn that someone is continuing to make abusive comments about you even after you've blocked them, you can ask a friend to report that person on your behalf. Reports are confidential and the user being reported does not know that they have been reported. After a report is submitted, we will investigate the issue and make a determination as to whether or not the content should remain on the site based on our Terms of Use. A Facebook administrator looks into each report thoroughly in order to decide the appropriate course of action.

Restrict Privacy Settings

To restrict the amount of information that potential bullies may have access to, customize your privacy settings so that certain people can't access information like your Wall, photos, or profile. You can also change your privacy settings if you are uncomfortable being found in searches or having your profile viewed publicly. Privacy on Facebook is controlled primarily from the Privacy Settings page. You can visit this page at any time by hovering your mouse over the "Settings" link at the top of any page of Facebook and selecting the "Privacy Settings" option from the drop-down menu that appears.

Respond to Abusers in the Right Way

Cyberbullies often seek a reaction from the people they harass. When they fail to get one, they often give up gradually. Rather than responding to a bully via Inbox, a Wall post, or Facebook Chat, you can delete offensive posts from your Wall or messages from your Inbox and then use the "Block" or "Report" functions to resolve the issue safely. To delete an offensive Wall post, hover over the post in question, click the "Remove" button that appears, and select "Delete" in the dialogue box. To delete a message from Inbox, simply click the "Delete" button at the top of the message. Only confirmed friends can post to your Wall or send you a message through Chat. If you are receiving posts and Chat messages you don't like, you should consider removing the sender from your friends list.

We are currently working with people whose accounts have been affected by money transfer scams

The money transfer scam is characterized by cybercriminals using Facebook in an attempt to trick your friends into sending them money. Most frequently, these criminals will gain control of a Facebook account, and use the Chat or Status features to claim that you are stuck in a far away location and in need of financial assistance.

It is possible that your email account was compromised as well, as obtaining access to a victim’s email is one of the primary ways these cybercriminals have been operating. Please take the following steps to ensure the security of your Facebook account:
  1. Select a unique and complex password for your Facebook account and keep this entirely to yourself. You can do this from the Account Settings page of your Facebook account or by using the "Forgot Password" link on the login page.

  2. Select a new, unique password for any email address associated with your account, making sure to avoid using the same password for any account.

  3. Verify that you control all of the email addresses associated with your account on the Contact Email section at:

  4. https://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php

  5. Add a security question to your account from the Account Settings page if you have not done so already.

  6. Visit the following page for more information about Facebook security and how to report suspicious material:

If you require further assistance in securing your account, please enter your account information in this form so that we can make sure your account is secure.
It is possible that malicious software was downloaded to your computer...
It is possible that malicious software was downloaded to your computer or that your password was stolen by a phishing website designed to look like Facebook. Please carefully follow the steps provided:
  1. Run anti-virus software: If your computer has been infected with a virus or with malware, you will need to run anti-virus software to remove these harmful programs and keep your information secure.

  2. Reset password: From the Account Setting page, you will need to create a new password. Be sure to use a different password than you use for other sites or services, made up of a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks that is at least six characters in length. Do not use words found in the dictionary.

  3. Never click suspicious links: It is possible that your friends could unwillingly send spam, viruses, or malware through Facebook if their accounts are infected. Do not click this material and do not run any ".exe" files on your computer without knowing what they are. Also, be sure to use the most current version of your browser as they contain important security warnings and protection features. Current versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer warn you if you have navigated to a suspected phishing site, and we recommend that you upgrade your browser to the most current version. You can also find more information about phishing and how to avoid it at http://www.antiphishing.org/consumer_recs.html and http://onguardonline.gov/phishing.html.

Phishing is an online attempt to trick a user by pretending to be an official login page or an official email from an organization that you would have an account with, such as a bank or an email provider, in order to obtain a user’s login and account information. In the case of a phishing login page, the login page may look identical to the login page you would normally go to, but the website does not belong to the organization you have an account with (the URL web address of the website should reflect this). In the case of a phishing email, the email may look like an email you would get from the organization you have an account with and get emails from, but the link in the email that it directs you to takes you to the above phishing login page, rather than a legitimate login page for that organization.

To prevent your account information from being obtained in a phishing scheme, only log in to legitimate pages of the websites you have an account with. For example, "www.facebook.example.com" is not a legitimate Facebook page on the "www.facebook.com" domain, but "www.facebook.com/example" is a legitimate Facebook page because it has the "facebook.com" domain. When in doubt, you can always just type in "facebook.com" into your browser to return to the legitimate Facebook site.
If you are still unable to access your profile, please send us more information regarding the issue so we can investigate. Please submit your report here.

If your account has been hacked and you can still access your login email address, please attempt to reset the password to your account by selecting the "Forgot your password?" link that appears above the Password field on the Facebook Login page. An email will be sent to you with steps for completing the process.

If your account has been hacked and the login email on your account has also been compromised or has been changed, please send us information about the account so we can look into it further and hopefully restore access. Please submit your report here.

Facebook has enabled third-party websites to use Facebook’s login and authentication system through a program called Facebook Connect. Facebook Connect allows users to take their Facebook identity, network, and privacy settings with them as they browse and interact with the rest of the Web.

Connect-enabled sites often provide an option to log in to Facebook directly from the site itself. When you see this, you should make sure that the login opens in a separate browser pop-up window, and that the Web address (URL) for the pop-up contains the proper "www.facebook.com" domain. If it does, you’ll know that it’s a legitimate Facebook page and not a phishing attempt, and you can log in safely and securely.

Note: if you’re logged in to Facebook, the Facebook Connect partner site should only ask you to "authorize" that site.
If you deactivate your account from the "Deactivate Account" section o...
If you deactivate your account from the "Deactivate Account" section on the Account page, your profile and all information associated with it are immediately made inaccessible to other Facebook users. What this means is that you effectively disappear from the Facebook service. However, if you want to reactivate at some point, we do save your profile information (friends, photos, interests, etc.), and your account will look just the way it did when you deactivated if you decide to reactivate it. Many users deactivate their accounts for temporary reasons and expect their information to be there when they return to the service.

If you do not think you will use Facebook again and would like your account deleted, please keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added. If you would like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log in to your account and then submit your request by clicking here.

We think there are many options for users to choose a username that represents their identity. But we also wanted to help our users avoid potential disputes concerning usernames that may be protected by intellectual property rights. In order to do that, we have encouraged rights owners to contact us if they want to reserve/protect certain names.

We've taken steps to limit this behavior. Only those who created accounts before username availability was publicly announced at 3 p.m. on June 9, 2009 will be eligible during the first wave, which lasts until 11:59 p.m. On Sunday, June 28, 2009. After 11:59 p.m. Users will be required to have a verified Facebook account, which may require mobile phone authentication. This decision was made to prevent people from creating new accounts just to take advantage of reserving a username. We've also reserved certain names that have been brought to our attention in an effort to help third parties protect their intellectual property and other rights. We also have a strict no transferability policy. If we determine that usage of a username is for squatting, that username will be reclaimed by Facebook.

When a user connects, you can use information provided via the API to help provide a richer user experience to that user. You can cache this data for up to 24 hours, but may not store or transfer it per the Facebook Platform Policies and Guidelines. This includes data that you may offer pre-filled in a form. For any data that a user manually enters directly into your application, this is considered independent data, and you can do whatever is permitted by your privacy policy.

You should refresh your version of the data at least every 24 hours to make sure you are using the most up-to-date versions of the information.

In addition, if you are ever displaying information about one user to another user, you must use the viewing user’s session key to request the data about the person being viewed. This will determine whether or not the viewing user has access to see the information. In the case where the viewing user is not connected with Facebook, use "null" for the session key, and you will be able to access public information. If you use xFBML or FBML to represent user data on your page, this will be handled automatically for you.

Facebook Pages enable artists, businesses and brands to communicate through the viral distribution mechanism that leverages Facebook users’ authentic social connections and rich communication channels, including News Feed, Mini-Feed, and Inbox. Because Facebook’s user profiles are authentic and their connections with other users are real, the social influence of these stories is tremendously powerful.

Users want to know what their friends are listening to and try out their recommendations. Whether it’s playing a track, watching a video, writing on the wall, writing a review, or attending an event, a fan’s interaction with a Page can generate News Feed stories to his friends. Since users can immediately click through to that Page and interact with it, engaging Pages will benefit from a virtuous cycle of user attention. Additionally, Pages will be publicly viewable, so Facebook users searching for a particular artist or company on the World Wide Web will find a presence for that group in an environment they know and trust.

An interaction occurs when a fan writes on your Wall, comments on your posts, or likes your content. The total of these actions aggregated over seven days is displayed in this section.

When you create compelling content, your fans may choose to interact with the material by commenting, liking, or writing on your Wall. These fans help to spread your content virally throughout Facebook, as their engagement leads to organic stories being published in their friends' News Feed.

To increase the number of Interactions and improve your Post Quality you may consider:
  • Making sure that your posts, whether they are Status Updates, photos, links, or videos, are relevant to your fans. Posting engaging content is the best way to get people to interact with your Page.

  • Posting frequently, but not posting an overwhelming amount of content that users may find spammy or burdensome to consume.

  • Increasing your total fan base to generate more interactions.

At this time, the Friend Finder is capable of looking directly at email address books for certain email domains (e.g., @hotmail.com). If the error message, "Unsupported Email Address" appears, then this feature cannot automatically look at the address book of your email address to find your friends.

However, you can still use this feature if your email client (the program you use to read your email) allows you to export your contacts list as a .csv, .vcf, or .txt file. Uploading this file to Facebook will allow us to use it to tell you which of your contacts are on the site. For more detailed instructions on how to do this with specific clients, please see the bottom of the Friend Finder page.

In the future, we hope to expand the feature's capabilities to serve the needs of a wider range of users. In the meantime, please feel free to utilize our other search and invitation tools.

Third party developers will also build an array of applications as they compete for Pages to install them. We expect that these tools will range from playing media to merchandising to ticketing. It is up to the developers who create the applications whether they create an application that can only be added only to personal accounts, or only added to Pages, or that can be added to both.

If you cannot find an application to do something that you want to appear on your Facebook Page, or if you have unique functionality that you’d like to add to your Facebook Page, then you should consider building your own application. You can build applications that work just on your Facebook Page, or which works on your Page and can be added by regular users to their own profiles.

While building applications is relatively simple, it does require an engineer to help you develop, deploy and maintain the application. For some tips on how to get started building applications, see Building Applications on the Facebook Platform.

  1. Run anti-virus software: If your computer has been infected with a virus or with malware, you will need to run anti-virus software to remove these harmful programs and keep your information secure.
  2. Reset password: From the Account Setting page, you will need to create a new password. Be sure that you use a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks that is at least six characters in length. Do not use words found in the dictionary.
  3. Never click suspicious links: It is possible that your friends could have unwillingly sent you spam, viruses, or malware through Facebook if their accounts were infected. Do not click this material and do not run any .exe files on your computer without knowing what they are. Also, be sure to use the most current version of your browser as it will contain important security warnings and protection features.

Facebook has several features in place to limit the potential for spam and abuse on the site. Verifying your account helps you retain control of your account and applications on Facebook.

There are two ways to verify your account. First, you can verify your cell phone, which allows us to verify that a real person is in control of the account. This process is explained at: http://www.facebook.com/confirmphone.php

The second way to verify your account is to affiliate with a college network. If your school provides you with an email address, you can add a college network from the 'Networks' tab on the Account Settings page, which can be accessed from the 'Settings' drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.

Unfortunately, if you cannot verify with a cell phone or add a college network, you may be unable to verify your account. We apologize for the inconvenience, but this is currently one of the most effective tools we have in place to protect our users and developers.

When you create a group, you can completely control its privacy. There are three different access levels:
  1. Open: For "global" groups, everyone on Facebook can view the group and join. If the group is exclusive to a specific network, only the people in that network can view the group or join it. All content (e.g., photos, videos and discussions) is visible to anyone viewing the group.
  2. Closed: For "global" groups, everyone on Facebook can see the group, but the administrators must approve all membership requests or personally send invitations. If the group is exclusive to one network, only people in that network can view the group or join it. Only group members can view its Wall, discussion board, and photo or video content. Non-members can view its Info and Recent News. If you are not a member, you will not receive stories about closed groups.
  3. Secret: These groups cannot be found in searches or be viewed by non-members. The name of the group will not display on the profiles of members. Membership is by invitation only. Non-members will not receive stories about secret groups.
Group administrators can change these options at any time by clicking "Edit Group" below the group photo.
