Friends: Friend Lists and Limited Profile

Friend Lists provide organized groupings of your friends on Facebook. ...
Friend Lists provide organized groupings of your friends on Facebook. For example, you can create a Friend List for your friends that meet for weekly book club meetings. You can filter your view of each list’s stream of activity separately on the home page. Friend Lists are easy to manage and allow you to send messages and invites to these groups of people all at once.

To create and customize your own Friend Lists, please follow these steps:
  1. Click the "Create New List" that appears beneath the filters on the left side of your home page or your Friends page. Or, click the "Create New List" button from the "All Friends" tab of the Friends page.
  2. Type the title of your list and hit enter.
  3. Add friends to the list by typing their names into the "Add to List" field or selecting them from the list.
  4. Select "Create List" to store your changes.
In addition, if you have more than two Friend Lists, you can easily add or remove friends from lists by using the drop-down menu that appears next to their names on the "All Friends" tab of the Friends page.

You can use Friend Lists to create different privacy levels for different groups of your friends. This allows you to selectively open more of your profile to the people closest to you. From the Profile Information section of your Privacy Settings page, clicking "Customize" will open a field for "Hide this from these people." Adding a friend or Friend List name here will hide the information in question from these people when they view your profile.

If you add a user to more than one Friend List, and those Friend Lists have conflicting privacy settings, the more restrictive of the privacy settings will always be respected.

If you enter three or more friends as an exception, you’ll have the option to create a new Friend List to group these people. You can create, edit and delete Friend Lists from your Friends page.

The Limited Profile functionality is a type of Friend List. You can limit the privacy settings for any friend list you create. If you had people on your Limited Profile, they have been moved to a new friend list called "Limited Profile," and this friend list has been added to the appropriate places on your privacy settings. For example, if you hid your Wall Posts in your Limited Profile, the new Limited Profile friend list has been placed under the "Except These People" setting for Wall Posts.

It is possible that malicious software was downloaded to your friend's computer or that their login information was phished in an attempt to send spam from their profile. We would like to investigate this issue further, but unfortunately, we cannot release information regarding a user’s account to anyone but the account holder.

We are currently working with people whose accounts have been affected by money transfer scams. Please use caution around messages from friends claiming to be stranded and asking for money.

Your friend's Facebook account may have been compromised by cybercriminals attempting to impersonate them. Most frequently, these criminals will gain control of a Facebook account, and use the Chat or Status features to claim they are stuck in a far away location and in need of financial assistance.

If you have received a message like this, please enter your friend's account information in this form so that we can make sure your friend's account is secure.

We are currently working with people whose accounts have been affected by money transfer scams

The money transfer scam is characterized by cybercriminals using Facebook in an attempt to trick your friends into sending them money. Most frequently, these criminals will gain control of a Facebook account, and use the Chat or Status features to claim that you are stuck in a far away location and in need of financial assistance.

It is possible that your email account was compromised as well, as obtaining access to a victim’s email is one of the primary ways these cybercriminals have been operating. Please take the following steps to ensure the security of your Facebook account:
  1. Select a unique and complex password for your Facebook account and keep this entirely to yourself. You can do this from the Account Settings page of your Facebook account or by using the "Forgot Password" link on the login page.

  2. Select a new, unique password for any email address associated with your account, making sure to avoid using the same password for any account.

  3. Verify that you control all of the email addresses associated with your account on the Contact Email section at:

  4. https://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php

  5. Add a security question to your account from the Account Settings page if you have not done so already.

  6. Visit the following page for more information about Facebook security and how to report suspicious material:

  7. http://www.facebook.com/security
If you require further assistance in securing your account, please enter your account information in this form so that we can make sure your account is secure.
It is possible that malicious software was downloaded to your computer...
It is possible that malicious software was downloaded to your computer or that your password was stolen by a phishing website designed to look like Facebook. Please carefully follow the steps provided:
  1. Run anti-virus software: If your computer has been infected with a virus or with malware, you will need to run anti-virus software to remove these harmful programs and keep your information secure.

  2. Reset password: From the Account Setting page, you will need to create a new password. Be sure to use a different password than you use for other sites or services, made up of a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks that is at least six characters in length. Do not use words found in the dictionary.

  3. Never click suspicious links: It is possible that your friends could unwillingly send spam, viruses, or malware through Facebook if their accounts are infected. Do not click this material and do not run any ".exe" files on your computer without knowing what they are. Also, be sure to use the most current version of your browser as they contain important security warnings and protection features. Current versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer warn you if you have navigated to a suspected phishing site, and we recommend that you upgrade your browser to the most current version. You can also find more information about phishing and how to avoid it at http://www.antiphishing.org/consumer_recs.html and http://onguardonline.gov/phishing.html.

Phishing is an online attempt to trick a user by pretending to be an official login page or an official email from an organization that you would have an account with, such as a bank or an email provider, in order to obtain a user’s login and account information. In the case of a phishing login page, the login page may look identical to the login page you would normally go to, but the website does not belong to the organization you have an account with (the URL web address of the website should reflect this). In the case of a phishing email, the email may look like an email you would get from the organization you have an account with and get emails from, but the link in the email that it directs you to takes you to the above phishing login page, rather than a legitimate login page for that organization.

To prevent your account information from being obtained in a phishing scheme, only log in to legitimate pages of the websites you have an account with. For example, "www.facebook.example.com" is not a legitimate Facebook page on the "www.facebook.com" domain, but "www.facebook.com/example" is a legitimate Facebook page because it has the "facebook.com" domain. When in doubt, you can always just type in "facebook.com" into your browser to return to the legitimate Facebook site.
If you are still unable to access your profile, please send us more information regarding the issue so we can investigate. Please submit your report here.

If you deactivate your account from the "Deactivate Account" section on the Account page, your profile and all information associated with it are immediately made inaccessible to other Facebook users. What this means is that you effectively disappear from the Facebook service. However, if you want to reactivate at some point, we do save your profile information (friends, photos, interests, etc.), and your account will look just the way it did when you deactivated if you decide to reactivate it. Many users deactivate their accounts for temporary reasons and expect their information to be there when they return to the service.

If you do not think you will use Facebook again and would like your account deleted, please keep in mind that you will not be able to reactivate your account or retrieve any of the content or information you have added. If you would like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log in to your account and then submit your request by clicking here.

When a user passes away, we memorialize their account to protect their privacy. Memorializing an account removes certain sensitive information (e.g., status updates and contact information) and sets privacy so that only confirmed friends can see the profile or locate it in search. The Wall remains so that friends and family can leave posts in remembrance. Memorializing an account also prevents all login access to it.

Once you have added content, you will still need to click "Share" in order to publish a story. To exit the submenu for a specific type of content, simply click the "X" in the upper-right corner of the Publisher box.

The Publisher also allows you to select a privacy setting for every post you make. After clicking inside the text box, or attaching your content, look for the lock icon next to the "Share" button. Clicking on it will bring up a menu that lets you choose who will be able to see your post, from Everyone, to Friends, to Friends of Friends.

If you type in the Publisher box and then add content (e.g., a link or a video), the text will appear as a comment above the content you have shared. It will not appear as a new status update or replace your current status.

Now you can tag your friends and other things you’re connected to in your Facebook status and other posts. This feature works with the Publisher box that appears on your home page and profile page.
  1. Type the "@" symbol in the Publisher text field, either to start the post or as a new word with a space before it.
  2. Directly after the "@" symbol, type any part of the name you would like to tag. A new drop-down menu will appear with all matching entries. You can tag friends, Pages, groups, events and applications.
  3. Click the name you would like to tag. It will appear as a blue link in your post. You can tag multiple different names in the same post.
People who can see your post will be able to click through to view the profile, Page, group or event you tag, but only if the existing privacy settings permit this.

Tagging allows you to more actively mention your friends and other things you are connected to on Facebook. It also lets you direct a post at specific people while still keeping the conversation open. Friends you tag will receive a notification and Wall story that you have tagged them, and also when someone else comments on a post they are tagged in.

Friends: Friend Finder feature

At this time, the Friend Finder is capable of looking directly at email address books for certain email domains (e.g., @hotmail.com). If the error message, "Unsupported Email Address" appears, then this feature cannot automatically look at the address book of your email address to find your friends.

However, you can still use this feature if your email client (the program you use to read your email) allows you to export your contacts list as a .csv, .vcf, or .txt file. Uploading this file to Facebook will allow us to use it to tell you which of your contacts are on the site. For more detailed instructions on how to do this with specific clients, please see the bottom of the Friend Finder page.

In the future, we hope to expand the feature's capabilities to serve the needs of a wider range of users. In the meantime, please feel free to utilize our other search and invitation tools.

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent your friends from seeing events that you are attending if they are set to the "Open" privacy option. However, they will not be able to see any "Closed" or "Secret" events you are attending. Keep in mind that events have three different privacy options:
  1. Open: Anyone can add themselves to the guest list without receiving an invitation or being approved by an admin. They can see the event information and all associated content (e.g., photos, Wall posts and videos).
  2. Closed: People must be invited to be on the guest list. Everyone can see the event info and request that the admin send them an invitation. Only those people who have received an invitation can see the event Wall and photos. People who are not invited will not see stories about closed events.
  3. Secret: The event can not be found in searches. These events are invitation only. People who have not been invited cannot view the event info, Wall, or photos. They also will not see any stories about the event.

"Secret" events do not appear in News Feed, and only invited guests will be able to view the event.

If you convert your business account into a user profile, you will still be able to manage all the Pages and Socials Ads you’ve created by clicking the Ads and Pages link in the left hand navigation menu entitled 'Applications'. The fans of your Pages will not have visibility or access to your personal profile. Any actions that you take as a Page administrator on your Page will show the Page’s name as the actor and not your personal name. However, if you wish to restrict your privacy so that other Facebook members cannot find you in search or add you as a friend, you can do so by clicking on "privacy" at the top any Facebook page.

News Feed will not display any stories that violate another user's privacy settings. If you can see a story about a non-friend, it is likely because this user has set their privacy for that piece of content to "Everyone."

It's important to remember that the "tagging" feature does not allow users to see photos that they wouldn't normally be able to see. If you're able to see photos that a non-friend uploaded through a photo that they tagged one of your friends in, it is because this person has most likely set his or her album privacy to the "Everyone" setting (so that everyone on the site is able to view it).

Restricting a user from seeing your Wall posts does not restrict them from seeing all the stories on your Wall. While the user will not be able to view Wall posts that you or your friends write directly on your Wall, they might still be able to view stories about your activity on the site, stories about content you have uploaded, or content that your friends uploaded to the site and tagged you in (if they are otherwise not able to due to restricted privacy settings).

To update who can view content that you post:
  1. Go to the Privacy Settings page from the Settings drop down menu.
  2. Click the "Profile Information" link.
  3. Click on the "Change Settings" button and enter your password.
  4. Update the "Posts by Me" section to a more restricted privacy setting. For example, if you do not want a certain person to view content, click on the lock next to this section, select the "Customize" option, and then type the person’s name in the "Hide this From" field.

When users post content to an open forum on the site (i.e., Facebook Pages, the "Questions and Answers from Users" section of the Help Center, "Open" Groups), this material may also be indexed by search engines.

Unfortunately, Facebook does not have control over content that has already been indexed and cached in search engines. If you no longer wish for this content to appear in search engine results, please delete it from the forum to which you originally posted it. Doing so will render the link that appears in search engine results invalid.

Blocking a user will prevent any type of direct interaction between you and that user. However, for technical reasons, there are certain instances when an individual you have blocked from your account may be able to view your comments on the site and vice versa, including comments on a mutual friend's photo. Please be assured that your listing will appear in black text, with no profile picture visible or contact links available.

Please keep in mind that you will see a different set of options than other users when searching for your account or viewing your profile. Since you cannot add yourself as a friend, the "Add to Friends" link will not appear. You will also always be able to see the links for "View Profile," "Send Message," and "View Friends" when you find your own account, but these options may not be available to every other user. Also, please remember that although you will never see the option to message or poke yourself on your own Profile page, other users will see this option.

If you have adjusted your Search settings on the Privacy page, these changes will be reflected properly when other users search for your profile.

Every Facebook user has the ability to customize his or her privacy settings. Users are able to limit who can view their profile (e.g., everyone, only their friends, etc.) and to choose who can see specific parts of their profile (e.g., their contact information, their personal favorites, their work history, etc.).

Privacy settings can be accessed through the "Privacy Settings" link from the "Settings" drop-down available at the top right side of any page on the site.

We appreciate your concern for your child's use of our website, but unfortunately we cannot give you access to the account or take any action on the account at your request. We are generally forbidden by privacy laws against giving unauthorized access to someone who is not an account holder. Please note that all users ages 13 and older are considered authorized account holders and are included in the scope of this policy.

We encourage parents to exercise any discretion they can on their own computers and in overseeing their kids' internet use. If you are a parent, you might also consider using software tools on your own computer in order to do so. Please do a search for computer-based Internet control technology on your preferred search engine to discover options that you may wish to pursue.

Please also talk to your kids, educate them about internet safety, and ask them to use our extensive privacy settings.

Facebook requires its users to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account. Providing false information to create an account is a violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

Applicable laws may give parents the right to access personal information their child has provided before Facebook follows its policy of promptly deleting such accounts. If you are aware of your underage child having an account on Facebook, you can show them how to delete their account by having them log into their profile and following this link.

If you would like to report an underage user (under 13 years of age), please do so here. We will promptly delete the account of any underage user that is reported to us through this form.

Alternatively, you can submit a request to Facebook here. Please be aware that you will be required to submit a notarized statement declaring your rights as a parent or guardian immediately upon using this form.

Privacy: Update to settings

Some settings are changing with the recent updates to Facebook privacy...
Some settings are changing with the recent updates to Facebook privacy, but Facebook’s commitment to providing you control over your information is not. Here’s a summary of what’s changing:
  • The Privacy page has been simplified, and in that process, some settings have been consolidated.
  • A privacy control has been added to the publisher at the top of your home and profile page. This allows you to set privacy on individual posts. For example, you could post a status to Everyone or only to Friends. Learn more on the Publisher help page.
  • Instead of having networks for regions (eg., Australia or New York City), people’s locations are now listed in the "Current City" or "Current Region" field of their profiles. This means if you use the "Friends and Networks" privacy setting, the networks part only applies to work and school networks.
  • A basic set of information is publicly available, meaning it’s visible to anyone that’s able to navigate to your profile, applications you use on Facebook, and websites you connect with via Facebook. This information includes your name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, friend list, and Pages. Any additional information (eg., photos or videos) will only be exposed if your privacy settings allow it.

Keep in mind that anyone who navigates to your profile will be able to view your publicly available information and information you’ve made visible to Everyone. While you do have the option to hide your Friend List from being visible on your profile, it will be available to applications you use and websites you connect with using Facebook. In addition, your profile picture appears in places you make comments and posts. You can always change your current profile picture or lower your search visibility if you choose.

Though cities and regions are no longer considered networks, they still appear in your profile. If you were previously affiliated with a regional network, this location is now listed in the "Current City" or "Current Region" field of your profile. You can edit this information by hovering over the "Contact Information" section and clicking "Edit."

If you restricted any of your privacy settings to "My Networks and Friends," then only confirmed friends and people that are in shared networks (high school, college, or work) can see this content. If you’d like to open your content to a broader audience, you can always edit your settings from the Privacy page.

Minors (anyone under 18) who use Facebook have a slightly different experience with privacy than adults. Both adults and minors have publicly available information (name, profile picture, gender, current city, networks, Friend List, Page) that will appear when people navigate to their profile and may be accessed by applications that they use. Adults and minors both appear in search results on Facebook.

However, the "Everyone" setting works differently for minors than it does for adults. When minors set information like photos or status updates to be visible to "Everyone," that information is actually only visible to their friends, friends of friends, and people in any school or work networks they have joined. Additionally, minors do not have public search listings created for them, so they do not appear in outside search engines until they have turned 18.

Publicly available information is visible to people visiting your profile page, and Facebook-enhanced applications (like applications you use or websites you connect to using Facebook) may access this information. It does not allow people without Facebook accounts to contact you.

Facebook created public search listings in 2007 to enable your friends to find you off of Facebook. When people search for you through a public search engine (eg, Google or Bing), they may see your public search listing. Your public search listing includes publicly available information (your name, profile picture, current city, gender, networks, friend list and pages). Please note that your Friend List will only appear in your public search listing if you allow Everyone to view this information.

In addition, any other information that you have made available to everyone using the Everyone privacy setting can be accessed by public search engines.

Your public search listing will only be available if you have the "Allow Indexing" box checked on the Search section of the Privacy Settings page. If you uncheck this box, people who do not yet use Facebook won’t be able to find you. Allowing your friends to find you both on and off of Facebook may make your experience more meaningful.

Friend removals are not caused by a technical error on the site, as it is not possible for a friend to be removed without confirmation from one of the users involved. The issue you are experiencing is caused by one of the following reasons:

The Atom feed or RSS feed of your friends' notes, statuses, or links or an individual user's notes, statuses, or links contains that content only, whereas News Feed contains stories about photo postings, relationship changes, etc. Also, your News Feed won't show a story every time one of your friends posts a note to Facebook; your News Feed only contains the stories we think you'll be the most interested in. The RSS or Atom feeds of a user's notes or your friends' notes, for example will contain every note posted. And finally, even though most web browsers display Atom or RSS feeds readably, you'll typically want to use a news aggregator to keep track of them.

    Facebook Connect

    Facebook Connect

You do all sorts of interesting things on the internet. Many of these interesting things happen within Facebook, which is why we created News Feed—to let your friends know what you're up to on the site.

But what about interesting things that you do on other sites? Maybe you commented on a blog or dugg an article on Digg. Maybe you put up something for auction on eBay, or found a video you love and wanted to share it. Wouldn’t it be nice if when you were on another site, you could easily find your friends on that site and see what they are doing there, just like you can on Facebook?

This is why we've created "Facebook Connect." When you visit sites that support Facebook Connect, you can choose to "Connect" your Facebook account to those sites. By connecting your Facebook account to a website, you will share some of your profile information with that site (so there’s no need to create another profile!), find and interact with your friends on that site, and be able to publish stories about actions you took on that site into your Wall, and potentially into the News Feeds of your friends.

Facebook Connect works a lot like authorizing an application on Facebook. You have complete control over your information, who sees it, and what information is published back into your Wall on Facebook. You can always choose when a story gets published to your Wall, and if you do not want a Facebook Connect site to publish a story for you, it's easy to opt-out at any time. Sites do not have access to your information unless you or one of your friends explicitly "connect" to that site, and your privacy settings are always obeyed.

When you connect with a website, it can access information you’ve added through Facebook to allow you to interact with your friends in new and interesting ways. The Platform Developer Terms of Service restrict how these sites can access this information, and all sites are contractually obligated to respect the privacy settings you’ve chosen for your account. These are the same terms that developers who have created the applications you use on Facebook must follow.

This means that if you’ve blocked a user on Facebook, that user will not be able to see you on a "connected" site. When other users connect with a website, those users will not be able to see information you’ve added through Facebook that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see simply by browsing Facebook. You can decide what types of information your friends’ applications can access from the "Applications" section on the Privacy page or opt-out of Facebook Platform entirely.

Just as News Feed has always enabled you to see what your friends are up to on Facebook, now, depending on the privacy settings of everyone involved, people can share many of the actions they take on the rest of the Web as well. People always have the option to refuse a News Feed story from another site. We want to give you the stories we think you’ll find most interesting and relevant; by including the actions you and your friends take both on and off of Facebook, we believe we will make News Feed even better at helping you stay in touch with your friends.

When you "connect" your Facebook account to your account on another site, you can automatically see which friends of yours have already connected their accounts, and they can see you as well.

When your friend connects their Facebook account with an external site, they will be able to compare their Facebook Friend List with information from that website in order to invite more friends to connect. For example, if you use Digg.com with the same email info as your Facebook account, and your friend connects their account with Digg, they will be able to see the fact that you have a Digg account unless you check the box discussed below.

Facebook has several features in place to limit the potential for abusive or annoying behaviors on the site. One of these features is a cap on the speed and frequency at which a user sends messages to other users while using the Inbox.

Please note that even if all of your conversations were legitimate interactions with friends, our Inbox message service is not a chat client and should not be treated as such. As a recommended alternative, we suggest that you check out the Facebook Chat feature, which allows you to exchange real-time messages with your confirmed Facebook friends.

To start using Facebook Chat, click the Chat icon in the bottom right corner of any Facebook page, and choose the "Go Online" option. You can start a conversation with any confirmed Facebook friend by clicking on their name in the "Online Friends" list. Once you send a message, your friend will receive an alert at the bottom of their screen, and they can reply by typing in the conversation box provided.

Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately send unsolicited bulk messages. While you may not have been purposely trying to commercially solicit other users, repeatedly sending the same message or making the same post is a violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use and is considered a very serious offense.

To protect our users from spam and other unsolicited commercial messages, Facebook has imposed stringent guidelines that flag when a user repeatedly sends or posts the same message, even if you were simply trying to organize a group or event.

Facebook has several recommended alternatives that can ensure these situations don’t arise again. If you were trying to organize an event and were sending out all of the information in messages, we suggest you create a Facebook Event by going to the Events page and then clicking "Create an Event." You can then fill in all the necessary information for the event and invite all your friends using the invite feature within the event. You can also utilize the "Message All" feature, which allows you to message all guests that have RSVP’d ‘yes’ to the event.

If you were trying to promote your group by posting a link to join it in a message, on a wall, or in a discussion board, this can be construed as spam. We suggest making your friends administrators of this group so that they can invite their friends using the Invite functionality built into the group. You can do this by clicking on "Edit Group Members" and then on "make admin" next to the users’ names. Each admin can invite his/her own friends to the group.

Facebook has determined that you were sending messages at a rate that is likely to be abusive. Please note that these blocks can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Unfortunately, we cannot lift the block for you.

When you are allowed to resume sending messages, keep in mind that it’s possible to run into a block based on how many messages you send and how fast you send them. It’s also possible to be blocked when either starting a new message thread or replying to a message. Lastly, deleting old messages will not allow you to send more messages. In the future, please proceed with caution to avoid hitting the limit again. Please be aware that further abuse of such features can result in your account being permanently disabled.

Start by visiting the Privacy Settings page, which you can access from the Settings drop-down at the top of any Facebook page. There are five links from which you can control particular settings:
    • Profile Information refers to the visibility of fields you fill out in your profile. Select who can see each type of profile content from each corresponding drop-down menu. If you choose the "Customize" option for any content type, you can hide content from specific friends or Friend lists.
    • Contact Information refers to who can see your contact information, as well as what options people have when they find you in search results (ie, the ability to add you as a friend or send you a message). Select who can see each type of information from each corresponding drop-down menu. If you choose the "Customize" option for any piece of information, you can hide content from specific friends or Friend Lists.
    • Applications and Websites is where you can learn about and control what you share with Facebook-enhanced applications and websites.
    • Search privacy refers to who can find your Facebook profile using Facebook search as well as public search engines.
    • Block List allows you to block specific people from interacting with you on Facebook. To block someone, simply enter the person’s name in the "Person" field and you will be prompted to select him or her from a list of search results. If you don’t find the person you’re looking for in that list, you can enter their email address in the "Email" field instead.

For security reasons, you are required to enter your password if you’d like to update your privacy settings.

    2. Have a unique, strong password: From the Account Settings page, be sure to use a different password than you use for other sites or services, made up of a complex string of numbers, letters, and punctuation marks that is at least six characters in length. Do not use words found in the dictionary.

    3. Run anti-virus software: If your computer has been infected with a virus or with malware, you will need to run anti-virus software to remove harmful programs and keep your information secure.

If you decline a friend request from this person, public stories about you (stories that have the privacy set to "Everyone") will no longer appear in their News Feed. For example, if you posted a video and set the privacy to "Friends," a person who is waiting for you to approve their friend request would not see that in their News Feed. If you had set the video to be visible to Everyone, that person would see it.

    Ads: Targeting Options

"Friends of connections" targeting allows you to target friends of your connections. Connections are fans of your Page, users who have RSVP’d Yes or Maybe to your Event, members of your Group, and users who have interacted with your Application.

In addition to harnessing the social graph by targeting your connections’ friends, every "Friends of connection" targeted ad promoting a Page or Event includes social content about a friend’s interaction with your business, amplifying the relevancy of your ad. Let’s take a look at an example. Annie is a fan of the Etsy Page. When Etsy wants to promote their Facebook Page, they can choose to target an ad to Annie’s friends by selecting the "Friends of connection" filter. Annie’s friends will receive the Etsy ad with the following sentence: "Annie Ta is a fan of this Page." Annie’s friends are naturally more interested because Annie’s interaction with Etsy is showcased directly in the ad.

To take advantage of this targeting capability, simply look for the "Friends of connections: Target users whose friends are connected to:" field in the ad targeting interface. As you begin to type the name of your Page, Application, Group or Event in the field, the names of eligible content that you manage on Facebook will appear in the type-ahead. You must be an admin of the Page, Application, Group or Event. It's not currently possible to target users who have connections with Facebook content for which you are not an admin.

You can stop or restart your ads by editing the "Status" at the top of the ad's page, or clicking on an ad's status when viewing in the Ads Manager's campaign view. "Deleted" ads can never be restarted, while "paused" ads can, so pause your ads if you may want to run them again. To restart paused ads, simply change their status back to "Active".

If your entire campaign is currently paused, you won't be able to restart individual ads. First unpause your campaign in order to run these ads again.

When you run your ad you will only be charged for the number of clicks you receive (CPC) or the number of impressions of your ad that are displayed (CPM). Paused or deleted ads will not accrue new charges.

Facebook runs advertisements from its own advertising system that let your friends know if you have a direct connection with a product or service, in the same way that your friends learn through your News Feed if you're connected with another friend or an organization's Facebook Page. For example, if one of your friends becomes a fan of a Page, you may see an ad with your friend's profile photo next to it, indicating the action that friend has taken with that Page.

Photo album privacy differs from the Photos profile privacy setting on the Application Settings page. The latter setting only controls who can see the Photos tab or box on your profile.

To edit your photo album privacy, just go to the Photos tab at the top of your profile. On this tab, select the "Album Privacy" link in the photo albums section, edit the setting for each album, and click "Save Settings." You can also adjust the album privacy setting every time you create a new album.

Keep in mind that some people may be able to see your albums even when they cannot view them on your profile if your album privacy settings are open. These less restrictive settings include "Everyone," and "Friends of Friends." Please note that the "Everyone" privacy setting allows anyone on Facebook to view the album if they are linked to it.

When you give users the option to become a fan of your Page, or RSVP to your event directly from the ad they're viewing, you give them a chance to easily connect with your Page or Event without interrupting their Facebook experience. They'll still be able to click through your ad to view the Page or Event itself, but this second option may be less disruptive to their Facebook experience, and increase engagement with your ad.

Once they've become a fan of your Page, or RSVPed to your Event, you'll be able to contact them with updates and other news, just as you can any other fan. In addition, when other users view the same ad, they will see friends who have already become a fan of your Page or are attending your Event, increasing the relevancy of the ad for them.

Your profile will not be visible to them and you will not appear in their search results or friend lists. Blocking is mutual, so they will also become invisible to you as well.

Keep in mind that blocking someone may not prevent all communications and interactions in third-party applications, and does not extend to elsewhere on the Internet.

Please note that removing a block will not restore a connection. If you block a friend and then remove that person from you Block List, you will need to send them a new friend request.

We want Facebook to remain an environment where people can connect and share comfortably. Cyberbullying is defined as the use of any new technology to harass or intimidate someone and is considered to be abusive behavior from minor to minor, while cyberharassment typically involves adults. There are steps you can take to prevent this kind of behavior if it occurs.

    Accept Friend Requests Safely

In order to prevent harassment from strangers, be careful to accept friend requests only from people you know in real life. Also, remember to report any messages or profiles that look suspicious. Facebook is based on a real-name culture, and fake profiles are regularly disabled when they're reported to us. Please also keep in mind that only confirmed friends can post to your Wall or contact you via Facebook Chat, so if you're worried that someone will make inappropriate posts or send offensive messages, just ignore that person's friend request.

Use the "Block" Feature to Stop Abusive Behavior

A block prevents specific people from viewing your profile. When you block people, any ties you currently have with them will be broken, and these people won't be able to contact you through Facebook. If you receive inappropriate or abusive communication, you can block the person by listing his or her name in the "Block People" box at the bottom of your Privacy Settings page. You can visit this page at any time by hovering your mouse over the "Settings" link at the top of any Facebook page and selecting the "Privacy Settings" option from the drop-down menu that appears.

Report Abusive Behavior Directly to Facebook

The most efficient way to report abuse is to do it in the same place it occurs on Facebook. For example, if you receive a harassing message in your Inbox, you can report the message by clicking on the "Report" link next to the sender's name as you are reading the message. If you receive a harassing message from a person who is a Facebook friend of yours, you should remove the person as a friend and report the message. Reporting the message as harassing will automatically add this person to your Block list. You can also use the "Report/Block person" link that appears at the bottom of the abusive user's profile. If you learn that someone is continuing to make abusive comments about you even after you've blocked them, you can ask a friend to report that person on your behalf. Reports are confidential and the user being reported does not know that they have been reported. After a report is submitted, we will investigate the issue and make a determination as to whether or not the content should remain on the site based on our Terms of Use. A Facebook administrator looks into each report thoroughly in order to decide the appropriate course of action.

    Restrict Privacy Settings

To restrict the amount of information that potential bullies may have access to, customize your privacy settings so that certain people can't access information like your Wall, photos, or profile. You can also change your privacy settings if you are uncomfortable being found in searches or having your profile viewed publicly. Privacy on Facebook is controlled primarily from the Privacy Settings page. You can visit this page at any time by hovering your mouse over the "Settings" link at the top of any page of Facebook and selecting the "Privacy Settings" option from the drop-down menu that appears.

Respond to Abusers in the Right Way

Cyberbullies often seek a reaction from the people they harass. When they fail to get one, they often give up gradually. Rather than responding to a bully via Inbox, a Wall post, or Facebook Chat, you can delete offensive posts from your Wall or messages from your Inbox and then use the "Block" or "Report" functions to resolve the issue safely. To delete an offensive Wall post, hover over the post in question, click the "Remove" button that appears, and select "Delete" in the dialogue box. To delete a message from Inbox, simply click the "Delete" button at the top of the message. Only confirmed friends can post to your Wall or send you a message through Chat. If you are receiving posts and Chat messages you don't like, you should consider removing the sender from your friends list.

This is a web page that can be easily checked by software tools called news aggregators that can notify you when any new content is available from a particular source. For example, if you subscribe to the feed of your friends' Notes, you can easily find out when one of your friends writes a new note.

A news aggregator lets you keep track of all the feeds you care about. Our current favorite is Bloglines, a web-based application that requires no installation. Atom and RSS feeds from Facebook include the Bloglines Feed Access Control extension , and we set the access parameter to "deny" for all of our feeds. We also indicate in our robots.txt that feeds should not be visited or indexed by bots. The major aggregators and search engines (Bloglines, Technorati, Google, Yahoo!) all appear to respect these directives. If you are very concerned about the possibility of someone seeing your Notes that you don't want him or her to see, we've added a privacy option that you can set on your Notes privacy page which will prevent any of your Notes from being syndicated in any RSS or Atom feed.

Now you can decide who can see each post you create. The Publisher Control allows you to choose from Everyone, Friends and Networks, Friends of Friends, Friends, or Customize. Use it to decide what you’d like to broadcast more widely, and what you’d like to keep among a smaller group of people.

When you share or publish content to "Everyone," anyone on the internet will be able to view it. This includes people who are not your friends on Facebook, and people who are not in your school or work networks. You should use this setting to publish content that you are comfortable making publicly available.

Remember that if someone can see content you’ve published to "Everyone," this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be able to view all information on your profile. What people can see when they click through to your profile is determined by what your privacy settings allow.

By selecting the "Customize" option in your Publisher Control, you can specify who is able and not able to view the content that you publish. When you choose "Customize," a dialog will appear. For any content that you can edit (e.g., photo albums, videos, or notes), you can retroactively change the Publisher Control setting by finding the content you wish to edit and then changing the privacy setting.

For content that can't be edited (e.g., status updates or links), you cannot change the Publisher Control after you click "Share." Instead, you can delete the content from your Wall, which will remove it from your friends' home pages. To delete a post, hover over it on your Wall and click the "Remove" button. You can then republish the same content with the correct privacy controls.

Note that retroactive steps you take to change the setting or remove the content won’t prevent any further distribution off of Facebook that may result from the prior privacy setting enabling others to have access to and share the content.

We do not accept ads for adult friend finders or dating sites or services with a sexual emphasis.

    Dating ads on Facebook must:
    * use text that includes the name of the dating site or service advertised.
    * be targeted to users over the age of 18.
    * be targeted only to users with a relationship status of "single".

You can view your ad as well as all the statistics related to the ads you have created on the Ad Campaigns page of the Ads Manager. On this page you can change your cost per click or CPM at any time while your ads are running, pause or unpause your ads, and delete your ads.

You will not see your ad actually running on Facebook unless you are a member of the target audience that you selected for your ad. Additionally, even if you are a member, you aren’t guaranteed to see your ad. This doesn't mean your ad isn't running, just that our system has determined that other ads would be more relevant to you. As long as you are seeing impressions reported in your ad statistics, this means your ad is running and can be seen by users.

A musical artist, business, or brand can create Facebook Pages to share information, interact with their fans, and create a highly engaging presence plugged into Facebook’s social graph. These Pages are distinct presences, separate from users’ profiles, and optimized for these presences’ needs to communicate, distribute information/content, engage their fans, and capture new audiences virally through their fans’ recommendations to their friends. Facebook Pages are designed to be a media rich, valuable presence solution for any artist, business, or brand that can be integrated seamlessly into the user experience with socially-relevant applications.

Facebook has determined that you were sending messages at a rate that is likely to be abusive. Note that these blocks can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

It is normal to see fewer tagged videos of someone in "View More Videos" than the total number listed. The tagged videos that do not appear most likely have a restricted privacy setting. For example, if your friend is tagged in a video that is visible to "Only Friends," you will only be able to view the tagged video if you are also friends with the person who uploaded it. Additionally, if you are unable to see a video in which you have been tagged, this may be because the account of the video’s owner is no longer on the site.

Because this application was not built by Facebook and is operated by an outside developer with its own technical resources, you will need to contact the developer who created the application. You can report this to the developer by going to the application’s About page and clicking "Contact Developer" at the bottom of the page, or by clicking "Contact" at the bottom of any canvas page within the application.

Facebook is not responsible for the support provided by this developer. However, Facebook works to ensure that all outside developers are following our Terms of Service. If you find that the developer is unresponsive to your inquiry, please report the application for abuse by going to the application’s About page and clicking "Report Application" at the bottom of the page, or by clicking "Report" at the bottom of any canvas page within the application.

To prevent further harassment, we also recommend that you block both the application as well as the user. Blocking an application will prevent you from receiving invites to add it and will disable the application from using your information. This means your friends will no longer be able to communicate with you using this application. It will also prevent the application from publishing stories in your News Feed.

To block an application, go to the Application Directory and find the application you wish to block. Once found, click on the picture for the application to see its About page. On the About page you will have the option to "Block this Application" on the right side of the screen.

To block a user, go to the Privacy Settings page and enter the name of the person you want to block in the "Block People" search field at the bottom of the page. Blocking allows you to prevent all interactions with someone on Facebook. They won't be able to find you in searches, view your profile, or contact you, and will not be notified that you blocked them.

Third party applications are prohibited by the Facebook Platform Developer Terms of Service from storing certain information for longer than 24 hours, but they do need to interact with this information in order to work on Facebook. In other words, applications are often only useful if they can interact with information that you or your friends have added. However, applications are contractually obligated to respect the privacy settings you’ve chosen for your account. This means that users of an application will not be able to see information you’ve added through Facebook that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see simply by browsing the site. If you want to prevent an application from interacting with your information in any way, you can block it from the application’s About page, which can be found by searching for the application in the Application Directory. You can also decide what types of information your friends’ applications can access from the "Applications" section on the Privacy page.

You can share a Facebook photo with any of your friends on Facebook by clicking on the "Share" link located under a photo or photo album. Please note that in order to send a photo to a friend in a Facebook message, the photo needs to exist either in a Facebook album or elsewhere on the internet. If it exists elsewhere on the internet, copy the URL (web address) of the photo and paste it into your message to that person, and a preview of the photo will appear. If the photo does not exist on the internet, upload the photo to one of your Facebook albums. Then, click the "Share" link below the photo to send a link and preview of the photo to your friend. For instructions on how to upload, please see the answer above.

Identify the people in your photos by tagging the images. To do this, follow the steps below:
    1. Go to the Photos page and select "My Photos."
    2. Click on the "Edit Album" link of the album that you want to tag.
    3. Click on a person’s face in the photo and then select their name in the box that pops up. If their name is not in the box, you can type it in the text field.
    4. Repeat this process for everyone in the photo that you would like to tag. If you need to tag yourself, select "me."
    5. After you have finished tagging your photos, click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page.
Please note that when you tag a friend in a photo, it will be accessible from the "View Photos of" link beneath their profile picture.

If you can't find a friend in search, there may be a few reasons for this:
    • The other person might have a privacy option that limits your ability to find them in a search.

    • Make sure to utilize the "People" search filter. This filter narrows your search to people on Facebook. From this filter, you can further refine your results by typing a location, school, or workplace in the appropriate field and clicking the "Refine Search" button. The Gift Shop was recently redesigned to deliver more ways for people to share gifts that are meaningful, useful, and fun with friends. Instead of having all gifts displayed within one box, you can now browse gifts more easily, the way you might in a mall. Since sharing music and physical gifts are important ways of staying connected with friends, we have added the option to send song gifts as well as real gifts. Additionally, you will also be able to send charity gifts, e-cards, and virtual gifts created by other parties, such as celebrity and registered brands.

To buy and send music, you can choose between web songs or downloadable MP3s powered by Lala.com. Web songs will appear in the gift recipient’s News Feed and profile Wall, where anyone can play them instantly. Recipients of MP3s will also have the ability to download them directly from their News Feed or profile Wall, as well as from the Gifts Received tab of the Lala application.

Once a user has authorized an application or connected with a website, they can add a Profile Box or Profile Tab to their profile. But to do this, your application must provide support for profile boxes and/or profile tabs.

Profile Boxes can appear on either the left-hand side of the wall/info tabs on a user profile, or within the Boxes tab. Users can add these from within your application or website via the fb:add-section-button FBML tag. Your application must first set the profile calling the method profile.setFBML. This method is also used to update the profile box for the user. See http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Fb:add-section-button and http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Profile.setFBML

Profile Tabs are manually added by the user to their profile via the "+" shown when the user is viewing their profile. This list will only show tabs for applications that the user has authorized. You must specify a URL for the application tab in the developer app for it to appear in this list. A tab is basically a full page that displays content from your application for the user to share with their friends on their profile. Profile Tabs are manually added by the user to their profile via the ""+"" shown when the user is viewing their profile. This list will only show tabs for applications that the user has authorized. You must specify a URL for the application tab in the developer app for it to appear in this list. A tab is basically a full page that displays content from your application for the user to share with their friends on their profile. Activity in your groups displays like information on your home page and Facebook Pages. Posts from your friends within a group can now appear in your News Feed. Actions you take in a group can also appear in a mutual friends’ News Feed. For secret groups, no stories will be generated in your friends’ News Feeds when you take an action in the group.

For example, if you add photos to a group where you and a friend are members, your friend will see this story in their News Feed. Mutual friends who are not in the group will not see this information.

Facebook Pages enable artists, businesses and brands to communicate through the viral distribution mechanism that leverages Facebook users’ authentic social connections and rich communication channels, including News Feed, Mini-Feed, and Inbox. Because Facebook’s user profiles are authentic and their connections with other users are real, the social influence of these stories is tremendously powerful.

Users want to know what their friends are listening to and try out their recommendations. Whether it’s playing a track, watching a video, writing on the wall, writing a review, or attending an event, a fan’s interaction with a Page can generate News Feed stories to his friends. Since users can immediately click through to that Page and interact with it, engaging Pages will benefit from a virtuous cycle of user attention. Additionally, Pages will be publicly viewable, so Facebook users searching for a particular artist or company on the World Wide Web will find a presence for that group in an environment they know and trust.

Every Page will appear in search results on Facebook. Users will also display any Page that they fan in their "I'm a Fan of..." box on their profile. Each "I'm a Fan of…" box lists a user’s Pages by Page category. Additionally, all Pages can be found in the Page Directory. You can browse to easily see your Pages, your friends' Pages, and view all Pages on the site.

An interaction occurs when a fan writes on your Wall, comments on your posts, or likes your content. The total of these actions aggregated over seven days is displayed in this section.

When you create compelling content, your fans may choose to interact with the material by commenting, liking, or writing on your Wall. These fans help to spread your content virally throughout Facebook, as their engagement leads to organic stories being published in their friends' News Feed.

To increase the number of Interactions and improve your Post Quality you may consider:
    • Making sure that your posts, whether they are Status Updates, photos, links, or videos, are relevant to your fans. Posting engaging content is the best way to get people to interact with your Page.

    • Posting frequently, but not posting an overwhelming amount of content that users may find spammy or burdensome to consume.

    • Increasing your total fan base to generate more interactions.

If you have a business account, you will be able to view and edit all of your Pages and ads created with that account. You can take any action on the Pages you administer, including editing your Page information or adding Page content such as photos, videos, and events. You can also view all the statistics related to both your Pages and your ads.

You will not, however, be able to view the profile information of any other users or add any other applications to your account. For example, business accounts can't be used to add friends, send messages, or interact with other Pages. Your account will not be visible in search and other users on the site will not be able to find you and add you as a friend.

News Feed is a feature that tells Facebook users about their friends’ recent activities on the site. The News Feed is the first thing users see on their home page when they log in to their accounts.

News Feed drives the viral spread of information on Facebook through networks of friends. It can cause a snowball effect – as something becomes more popular, more people hear about their friends doing it through News Feed, and then do it themselves. This, in turn, causes even more people to hear about it through News Feed, and so on. This can result in literally hundreds of thousands of people hearing about something in just a matter of days.

Harnessing the power of News Feed is crucial to accruing a high number of supporters and spreading your message to the most people on Facebook.

By default, you can only view users in your own networks or your confirmed friends from other networks on Facebook. Note that you may not be able to view the profiles of everyone within your network due to privacy restrictions. You can customize your profile privacy settings further from the Profile section of your Privacy Settings page.
