Brisbane Celebrates: 2009 Lord Mayor's Photographic Awards
Finalists and selected entries from the fifth annual Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards are now on show. The Brisbane Celebrates exhibition which features more than 150 photographic works, including the winning entries, which will be on display at MoB until 24 Dec...ember 2009.
This year’s awards attracted entries that pay tribute to how the people of Brisbane celebrated our 150th year. Entries were judged on both interpretation of theme and technical quality by a panel including the Lord Mayor, Network Ten’s Amanda McLeay, ourbrisbane.com’s Dani Nash and Museum of Brisbane Director, Peter Denham.
This year’s awards were an opportunity for the community to provide unique visual perspectives on a landmark year in our city’s history, and a chance for photographers of any age to showcase their talents.
Many entries on display have captured the amazing community spirit of Brisbane residents, both young and old. Some of Brisbane’s iconic events like the Ekka and Riverfire were also popular choices for the photographers who took part.
Visitors to the Brisbane Celebrates exhibition can also vote for their favourite photograph in the ourbrisbane.com People’s Choice Award.

Museum of Brisbane presents this solo exhibition by Karla Dickens.
Dickens' work is concerned with feminine power, tradition, and the power of personal narrative. The deaths of two family members provided a catalyst for the artist and are hovering presences, figuratively and literally, in her vividly coloured mixed-medi...a works. The artworks explore personal and profound influences that pulse with intensity and energy.
Karla Dickens is an Indigenous artist who currently lives in Goonellabah. She works in a wide range of materials including painting and sculpture. Her recent work involves richly ornamented and collaged paintings, which use retrieved or scavenged textiles which come with a complex history of use and sentiment.
As Brisbane celebrates 150 years of the establishment of the city as a municipality, throughout 2009, Museum of Brisbane is presenting work by Indigenous artists to celebrate, acknowledge and honour the long history, culture and heritage of Indigenous people of the region.
