Orion Magazine Loved this quote from P.D. James: “You may be in the country, leaning on a fence, and there’s the smell or the sight of a bean field and suddenly there’s that tingle of wonderful physical wellbeing, a sense of being completely at home in the world — as much at home as the bird is in the air or the fish in the water. It just steals upon you.”

Once had an office down the hall at UC Ivine and ran into her...literally. Ah...to be a grad student again!

Adam Dalgleish? PD James is by far the best mystery writer in the English language. Her use of language is the reason, not her command of the genre, although that's not too shabby either.

I believe Britain is also the locale of the first "transition town" format for building sustainable community collaboratives? Very Cool and growing concept. For the US version check out transitionus.org

Orion Magazine Great to see Michael Pollan's "food rules" on Huffington Post -- http://bit.ly/7hu3Ah

bit.ly
I set out to collect and formulate some straightforward, memorable, everyday rules for eating, a set of personal policies that would, taken together or even separately, nudge people onto a healthier and happier path.

Michael Pollan has distilled lots of common sense into easy to read and digest (no pun intended) guidelines. Good advice.

Orion Magazine The next Great Barrington Green Drinks will be Wednesday, January 6th, at Route 7 Grill, from 5:15 on.

Come down and raise a glass to the last year and share your plans for 2010 - for the garden, a conservation project, whatever. You'll find us clustered around Route 7's raging fireplace.

What exactly is Green Drinks, yo...u may ask? Well, it's a monthly social event hosted by the folks who publish Orion magazine, for people like you interested in everything from environmental education to local agriculture, the arts, green business & design, and the ways all of these intersect.

As always there will be deliciously free d'oeuvres, courtesy of our lovely/handsome Route 7 hosts, and copies of the new issue of Orion magazine for your enjoyment.

So grab a friend and bring them down to share what you're working on and meet others active in the community.

Please forward this on to your friends and Facebook contacts...the more the merrier.

Erik

Orion Magazine Great to see Orion's former assistant editor Kim Leeder and her husband Tom at the office today (even briefly). Kim worked at Orion 2000-2002.

Elizabeth R Schwartz

Elizabeth R Schwartz Thanks Derrick Jensen for the push to get readers to find what we love and DO SOMETHING. The evening before receiving this edition of the magazine, my son and I had a conversation about wanting to give Christmas presents that save the earth, rather than to each other. A heated discussion ended in a consensus that next... year we will cut down ivy that is climbing and suffocating trees in Portland Oregon's Forest Park instead of killing a tree to decorate our living spaces.
