The State Fair was amazing! However I'm not a fan of 4H! Sadly they have failed to progress with time in what they teach young people of today! They know no difference between "domesticated" and "companion" animals and that they are not the same as cattle and or farm animals. To promote breeding cats and dogs is unacceptable for there are THOUSANDS... See More and THOUSANDS that die each day!
And especially in today economy where there are NOT enough homes for animals to go too! Each and every year I get a call from some clueless parent looking for a unaltered female so she can let her daughter breed it for 4H... And then when I suggest that they "foster" a pregnant cat they laugh and then proceed to tell me that her daughter has help the female get pregnant... UGH! So State Fair, why not give a little hint to 4H and tell them they need to understand the times and the economy!

Hmmm. My kids were in 4-H and we never had a cat or dog breeding project. In fact, I don't know that they promote purebred in any project we were in.

They have economy projects and they dont do domesticated farm animals, the people who show farm animals kill them after the shows, also the domesticated animals such as dogs and cats HAVE TO be fixed before they'll accept them in any show or project, they have also changed many things over time to work with the modern people.

My kids are in 4-H and they in no way promote dog and cat breeding. The dog project is all about teaching ghildren how to properly train their dog. Most of the 4-H dogs in our county are dogs that have been rescued from the local animal shelter. The only project that I know of where they can exhibit a cat is the small pets project, and I don't ... See Morebelieve that they teach anything other than how to properly care for your pet in that project. I don't think I have ever seen 4-H promote breeding of dogs or cats, maybe there are some 4-H families that do this but I wouldn't blame it on 4-H.

I LOOOOVED that the horse shows were free this year. We watched the 6 and 8 horse hitch competitions. Fantastic!!

Please tell them to have free shows next year!! Maybe next year we will go on a day after they have switched to western horses and we can watch a rodeo style competition.

I think before you call 4H out you should do some research on what 4H is about. They give kids wonderful opportunities and it is a shame that you would expect the State Fair to "give them a hint" in regards to what they teach.

4-H is very dependent on volunteer help so if you have issues or want to learn more, I'm sure your county extension program would appreciate your expertise. Volunteer!

4-H ... one of the greatest organizations there is for a kid to be involved with. City, country, doesn't matter where. I'd say 4-H has MORE progressed with the times!
