Owen, author of “Clubland: The Fabulous Rise and Murderous Fall of Club Culture” and “No Speed Limit: The Highs and Lows of Meth”, shares his evolution as a journalist, from music critic for Spin magazine and the Village Voice to award winning investigative reporter and nonfiction author. This lecture will be a journey... through an amazing literary career, and is open to everyone.
And don’t miss Owen’s special tskw workshop...
Narrative Journalism
Thurs, Jan 7 and Fri, Jan 8 from 1 to 4 pm
Owen will discuss the dangers and challenges of writing about true crime. Unlike traditional true crime reporting which depends heavily on law enforcement sources, Owen writes about crime from the street level, often relying on the criminals themselves to tell their own story.
Participants in the workshop will follow the process of writing a story from the initial idea through the reporting and interviewing, finishing with how to turn the raw material into an entertaining and dramatic narrative.

Join us for our monthly open house! The reception will also serve as the opening for two new exhibitions at the Armory...
Combat Paper: Fibers of Reason (Main Hall Exhibition)
The Combat Paper Project is based out of Green Door Studio in Burlington, Vermont, and arrives in Key West after traveling throughout the United ...States. The story of the soldier, the Marine, the men and the women and the journeys within the military service in a time of war is the basis for the Combat Paper Project.
Members of the project have been traveling across the United States and United Kingdom, working with hundreds of survivors of conflict. All of the works in this exhibition have been created from old uniforms worn during military service and rendered by their owners into paper. Using traditional techniques, the final results include artist's books, broadside prints and large format sheets. This extraordinary project ends its tour and year in Key West, and has been made possible by a multifaceted collaboration between artists, studios, art collectors, academic institutions and veterans.
Project Generously Sponsored by Southernmost Restaurant Group

John Martini's World (Sculpture Garden Exhibition)
Sculptor John Martini, The Studios of Key West, and about a dozen local community members have joined forces to help us populate the Armory Sculpture Garden with a handful of wondrous new characters. The installation features a dozen sculptural works by one of the island's most respected and interesting public artists.
To assemble this exhibit of his work, The Studios of Key West, under the supervision of facilities manager Lauren McAloon, invited a diverse representation of the community to serve as curators. Each was required to visit Martini's Bahama Village studio, peruse the dozens of figurative sculptures and outdoor works inside, select their favorite piece, and finally write a few words on why they chose that particular sculpture.
Pieces were selected by a dozen Key West community members:
Norman Aberle
Stuart Kemp
Julio Barroso
Emily Harris and Millie Weech
Megan Thieme
Sandra McMannis
Dawn Sieracki
Jennifer O’Lear
Dr Jerome Covington
Don Riggs

Tom Prasada-Rao burst on the singer-songwriter scene in 1992 and has not let up since. He's won awards, played major music festivals with many of his heroes, and headlined at singer-songwriter venues across the country. The Studios of Key West is proud to present his Key West debut at the Historic Armory on December 10... at 8pm.
Tom was born in Ethiopia of Indian parents, and educated in England, the US, and India, and his music reflects that diversity- blending pop melodies with R&B rhythms and finely crafted lyrics with his acoustic guitar. He's been called a singer-songwriter of breath-taking vision. In addition to producing, he's a teacher at White Rock Montessori in Dallas-and he taught for eight years at The University of Virginia and created the songwriting curriculum there. Jim Bessman of Billboard Magazine, gives Prasada-Rao high praise: "Visually and musically, Tom is the most compelling presence to emerge in the singer-songwriter genre as I've seen in a long time."
