If you ask one hundred people to do a task (particularly one that involves following instructions or using a computer or both), figure that two of them will mess it up. It doesn't matter if you use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS....

ain't that the truth! (but yeah, i think it's higher than 2% from my experience... I would say much higher as in a group of 20, i could easily have one or two.) .But, factoring in this does lead to better instructions (albeit, longer and perhaps for the rest of the group, redundant or irritating, or worse "intelligent insulting" extra instruction)

I love option number 2...annoy, demonize and lose the 2% (who could very well be different every time) sounds like a hell of a lot of fun!

In Direct Marketing, we've been teaching LTV for years...and still no one gets it. I used to talk to phone companies, and they'd say they could pay $10. for a new customer...one that probably would be worth thousands of dollars to them.
Makes me so upset about car companies, insurance companies, etc.

Getting someone to switch is really difficult. Getting someone to switch because you offer more of what they were looking for when they choose the one they have now is essentially impossible. For starters, they're probably not looking for more....

Often internet advertising is blown out of proportion vs. traditional media like TV and radio. They are more effective often times on a reach x frequency basis to target the mass consumer. Internet is better at target audiences.

Dunbar's number is 150. And he's not compromising, no matter how much you whine about it. Dunbar postulated that the typical human being can only have 150 friends. One hundred fifty people in the tribe. After that, we just aren't...

@ David wasting their time! I postulate that our mental name registry has a finite number of entries available. When you try to exceed the limit, a function similar to Windows clean-up (you have icons on your desktop never used) occurs. Go to a college reunion 25 years later and think of of how many people in your dorm you knew then - and now you go "you lived two doors down? Oh really..."

I have several hundred "friends" on Facebook. But in fact there are different levels of friendship, and different amounts of time spent with them. Some are people who were once close and are now distant; others are people who I have never met personally but are quite close. Some are people I see every day or at least once a week. FB Friends are ... See Morejust not "friends" in the same way as Dunbar Friends. Which means you need to choose your friends carefully, as they are a treasure. The one thing you can't buy more of in this world, and you can't be given more of, is time and apparently friends!

Maybe it should be limited to the number that you would loan $50, no questions asked. Or that you would have lunch with...I think most people have friends on social nets just to hear about their doings, not necessarily do or speak with them, like a community newspaper.

I agree that social media's general definition of friends is not what is being defined here. After the initial contact most FB friends become nothing more than commenters that like to talk about themselves or their opinions. Hardly the definition of friends Dunbar had in mind.
I would go farther than Dunbar and say to have even 10 good friends that you interact with on an intimate level is extraordinary in todays context.

What we forget is that 150 is a very good number when ideas go viral. It's not how many people you know but who they know and who they communicate with.
