You should be careful about headlines. It's pretty easy to write a headline that will get someone to forgive your spam, and perhaps even to open your note (CyberMonday! 85% off...). It's pretty easy to write a headline that will...

Mike: I don't think so--he proved that sensational headlines will get a person to click through--but once a consumer clicks through a few times only to find that the content doesn't live up to the headline, the consumer starts to resent the business that suckered them into clicking through. (For instance, I'm personally starting to feel that way ... See Moreabout a major book chain right about now--they keep having fantastic email subject headings, but the savings in the flyer is not as exciting...I will be choosing their competitor soon...I don't trust them so much any more...)

You're right, Pamela.
I think I might be on the same book sellers list. I don't even open their emails anymore... kind of sad

If you walk into a company-owned cell phone store to sign up for a contract, what are you worth? Given the huge gross margins at AT&T and Verizon and the standard two-year contract, I think it's easy to figure on...

In Direct Marketing, we've been teaching LTV for years...and still no one gets it. I used to talk to phone companies, and they'd say they could pay $10. for a new customer...one that probably would be worth thousands of dollars to them.
Makes me so upset about car companies, insurance companies, etc.

Identify the value customers, and focus on them, treat them well. A strategy Apple also used.

Disruptive thinking = Do not try to switch the hammer — that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no hammer.

Getting someone to switch is really difficult. Getting someone to switch because you offer more of what they were looking for when they choose the one they have now is essentially impossible. For starters, they're probably not looking for more....

Mark points us to this great set of stats. Basically, all of the clicks for all the ads online come from only 16% of the surfers, and most of them come from just 4% of all internet users. So, if...

Great Seth, just because online ads can be measured doesn't mean quality needs to be compromised.

Thsi concept is fundamental to anyone building a business website. Surfers come to the internet more often for information, not to buy stuff.

If you structure your site to please only those looking to buy, you are ignoring the majority of potential visitors.

Those information seekers, can often make you more in passive income, than your visitors who buy directly through your website.

These stats are confined to Web site ads, yet are interesting. What would be more interesting is a similar metric for clickthroughs on Google and on the social networking sites like this one. Also, I'm interested in age segment breakouts, if available.

I'm not sure it would be this extreme for PPC ads for the same reason click thru rates on content match tend to be significantly lower than search ads. The reason people do a search in the first place is because they are looking for something to click on. most of the time.

Often internet advertising is blown out of proportion vs. traditional media like TV and radio. They are more effective often times on a reach x frequency basis to target the mass consumer. Internet is better at target audiences.

Dunbar's number is 150. And he's not compromising, no matter how much you whine about it. Dunbar postulated that the typical human being can only have 150 friends. One hundred fifty people in the tribe. After that, we just aren't...

I agree that social media's general definition of friends is not what is being defined here. After the initial contact most FB friends become nothing more than commenters that like to talk about themselves or their opinions. Hardly the definition of friends Dunbar had in mind.
I would go farther than Dunbar and say to have even 10 good friends that you interact with on an intimate level is extraordinary in todays context.

What we forget is that 150 is a very good number when ideas go viral. It's not how many people you know but who they know and who they communicate with.

David, I agree with you. I think this money is well spent. $880 in NYC is a fair price for such seminar and networking opportunity. And all the fees from the second seminar are donated to the charity.
