Half the commenters here fail at reading comprehension, apparently. Here's the the simplified version:

Sask could not find anyone to defend the fundamentalist point of view. No lawyer was available to represent the people who wanted to discriminate against gay marriage.

Now do you get it?

They never stop trying. Aren't there issues like disease, starving children, unemployment let alone REAL religious subject matter they can spend the time and money on?

I don't understand this. Why would someone want force a commissioner to marry them who was opposed to their marriage regardless of the reason?

"Marriage" Call it what it should be.... Life long Domestic Partnership. You could say a Commitment Celebration istead of a wedding. You could call it Partners. The Words are what is screwing everything up. If we just change the words therefore changing the meaning then whomever wants to get "Married" Can do so in their respective religions. ... See MoreReligion has no place in government unless you would like to be back in ancient times of Monarchy or Dictatorship. Wake up America. "WE" ARE AMERICA and "WE" WILL BE HEARD!

Actually, I think a minister should be allowed to refuse to marry a same-sex couple. A judge, on the other hand, should NOT.

Separation of church and state and all.

A minister can deny any marriage. Straight or gay, the minister has that discretion already. It's in the laws

Okay, not in Canada, but a comment about US and "religious exemption" The US was founded with the premise of no government interference with religion, yet religious groups use their religion as an excuse to block gay marriages. The very right that they have been granted is now used as an excuse to deny rights of others. Just something to ponder..

In response to Don Azars, if you think gay marriage is so unimportant but you care about children, then consider the fact that many loving and responsible gay couples might be want to adopt a child, but couldn't until their marriage was legally recognized. Do you know how many orphans there are in the world? Would you rather the orphans remain orphans?

Keeping Church and State separated is still the proper way to conduct things. Gay marriage is a matter of civil rights. The Church does not have to marry a couple, but equal rights for all should never be up to a vote!!!!!! When do we get to vote on straight marriages?
