Rob Pegoraro From the blog...

Earlier Tuesday, Google introduced the latest in a growing number of phones running its Android operating system. This one, however, includes a new version of that software with a few extra features, runs on a faster processor, is for sale on the company's own site, and... doesn't require signing up for service with a wireless carrier....

A few months ago, a widely used operating system received a major upgrade -- and Microsoft and Apple had nothing to do with it. This upgrade came from the developers responsible for one of the most popular versions of the open-source Linux operating system Ubuntu. Like ...earlier editions, Ubuntu 9.10 is free for anybody to use, should run on even old and slow Windows-compatible desktops and laptops and is immune to...

Rob Pegoraro My attempt to make art of my overloaded CES schedule: a screen grab of the next few days of my calendar, run through the "Pointillize" filter in a graphics app. Think I have enough items on my agenda?

Rob Pegoraro My column:

One of the more competitive desktop software categories today was nearing extinction a decade ago, even though there's now much less need for it than there was back then. It's funny how the software business works sometimes.

Rob Pegoraro This week's Q&A:

Q: I understand that I'm not supposed to leave my old computer or TV out with the trash. How should I get rid of it?

Every year, Post business reporters have to fill out a form detailing their stock and bond-market investments to confirm that none of these holdings could represent a conflict of interest. Because the paper already frowns on us investing in companies we cover, indulging... in such forms of market speculation as day-trading and short-selling, and acting on private tips from sources, this form can be a boring proposition....

As 2009 winds -- make that grinds -- to a close, I've been looking through my notes to see if I've left any stories unfinished. I have, of course, and one of the items I most regret not writing about is a little digital-TV tuner you can plug into a Mac to watch and reco...rd live, high-definition TV off the air....

Rob Pegoraro How many people remember reading Omni in the early '80s and wanting to live in that magazine's vision of the future? [Raises hand]

It was an awesome mag. I would run out as a kid and get every issue.

I remember it well when it first came out. In its hay day it was a fantastic mag. I guess I'm one of those former readers who have migrated over to Wired. Wired doesn't have the neat fiction, but, especially towards the back, it has fantastic and thoughtful stories. Former Omni fans who haven't read it should give it a try (and no, I'm not afiliated with Wired.)

Rob Pegoraro Less-than-brilliant observation: Telecommuting has really ruined the fine art of the sick day. Here I am stuck home with a cold, but instead of napping I'm reading my e-mail (and Facebook updates) and pretending that I'm staying productive.

Rob Pegoraro My column:

Considering the time and expense involved, the biggest story in technology this year could have been the largely successful transition to digital television that wrapped up in June. But 2009's most significant tech developments took place on much smaller screens.

Rob Pegoraro Merry Christmas, everyone! If Santa brings you any sort of gadgets this year, I hope they don't require calls to tech support... or e-mails to me :)

Last weekend, the Post's arts critics weighed in with their lists of the year's best movies, music, plays, fashion and so on--which means it's time to play another round of "can I download that movie at a legitimate site, or does Hollywood only want to sell or rent a DV...D?" Last year, this exercise yielded dismal results when I checked the availability of Ann Hornaday's top-ten flicks on DVD compared to...

Pay no attention to headlines predicting that Microsoft Word will be banished from store shelves on Jan. 11 because of a patent ruling. The widely-used word processor isn't going anywhere, nor does today's ruling (PDF) by the District-based United States Court of Appeal...s for the Federal Circuit represent any sort of earth-shattering development in patent law....

As Washington-area readers can attest, we've had a little snow this weekend. As in, anywhere from 16 inches to two feet. So that's kept a lot of people in their homes, or at best in their neighborhoods--and in response, most of them seem to have jumped online to post Fa...cebook status updates, Twitter updates, and photos and videos of the winter wonderland outside--and then post their comments on all of the...
