You should be careful about headlines. It's pretty easy to write a headline that will get someone to forgive your spam, and perhaps even to open your note (CyberMonday! 85% off...). It's pretty easy to write a headline that will...

Mike: I don't think so--he proved that sensational headlines will get a person to click through--but once a consumer clicks through a few times only to find that the content doesn't live up to the headline, the consumer starts to resent the business that suckered them into clicking through. (For instance, I'm personally starting to feel that way ... See Moreabout a major book chain right about now--they keep having fantastic email subject headings, but the savings in the flyer is not as exciting...I will be choosing their competitor soon...I don't trust them so much any more...)

You're right, Pamela.
I think I might be on the same book sellers list. I don't even open their emails anymore... kind of sad

Brilliant and very needed netiquette rules. How many times have we skipped an otherwise interesting discussion because some trolls took the low road and polluted the civility for everybody? By all means avoid "Reductio ad Hitlerum" ;-)

Naming the swine flu vaccine after a kid who died might be a good idea since it may do as much damage to people as the last swine flu vaccine did.

If you walk into a company-owned cell phone store to sign up for a contract, what are you worth? Given the huge gross margins at AT&T and Verizon and the standard two-year contract, I think it's easy to figure on...

In Direct Marketing, we've been teaching LTV for years...and still no one gets it. I used to talk to phone companies, and they'd say they could pay $10. for a new customer...one that probably would be worth thousands of dollars to them.
Makes me so upset about car companies, insurance companies, etc.

Identify the value customers, and focus on them, treat them well. A strategy Apple also used.

Brilliant idea. Keeps the money out of the lawyers' hands. Keeps control in the entrepreneur's hands. I love the buyout option. Why not sell x% of revenue until the investment is paid off at 100% profit (or more depending on risk)? You could even cap the payouts for a number of years instead of forever.

I read a book called "ONO: Options not Obligations" it is a very nice template for life. It also mirrored my perspective. I enjoy your blog posts Mr. Godin. I ReTweet them daily, sometimes several times a day! Your insights are right on the money. I loved "Breakthroughs and Drips!" John

Getting someone to switch is really difficult. Getting someone to switch because you offer more of what they were looking for when they choose the one they have now is essentially impossible. For starters, they're probably not looking for more....

Hallo!

i hope that you are fine! This comes as a surprise to you i know, ... See More
but i find it very necessary to get someone out there who is gifted
and could listen!

My name is Biko Steven Ochola. Am 24years old. My family owns an an old 200-bed -capacity private hospital in HomaBay Town South-Nyanza, Kenya, East Africa. My father who was running the hospital as a medical doctorand had worked very hard, passed away in 2006. The hospital stopped working in 1995. Since then the machines and other equipment are stored and just deteroriating in condition!
I have just completed my Diploma in Medical Imaging Science and i have an idea of putting up a Diagnostic centre in the facility since there is no such kind in the region- Nyanza Province.

Hoping that your work could have any ideas to solutions towards reviving the hospital to help the less fortunate, i humbly await your kindest reponse. Personally am not able to run/operate the facility and neither can my mum! It is going to waste! I could send you pictures of the facility as testimony if need be!

Yours faithfully,
Biko Steven Ochola

I had to 'fire' a client one time. You should see my wife's face when I told her that ;->

We can't satisfy all of our clients but we want to keep the relationship alive at all times.

Often internet advertising is blown out of proportion vs. traditional media like TV and radio. They are more effective often times on a reach x frequency basis to target the mass consumer. Internet is better at target audiences.
