Salut TCKs, My name is Brice, I'm a mixed race French/Vietnamese and Ethiopian TCK living in Canada.
If you're cross cultural/TCK, how do you answer the question "Where are you from?". Leave a comment and let me know.

sometimes I just start by saying I'm from EARTH. Then there's a pause in the conversation, they throw me a wierd glance, and then most times an avalanche of questions.

i used to just cover up by saying that i'm from "insert most recent place i've been to*.
But now i just say the place where I was for the most time in my life. and if someone ask me about the place, i just say "but i can't remember" it's not my fault, right?

One of the partners I work for asked me this recently in a team meeting and every answer felt like a lie!! I had just joined the group and completely hated being put on the spot like that (I wasn't expecting it...) I gave the answer the place I lived the longest, LA because it also matches my accent though technically I'm English and was in England at the time he asked. (Guess he figured I wasn't from England! Or he wouldn't have asked!!)

I was born in Taiwan. My parents came from China. I grew up in the USA and I have an American passport. My husband has a Canadian passport with a birthplace called "Vietnam". He lived in Taiwan before he was 12 and moved to the USA, then Canada. Now we live in Hong Kong. Our twin boys were born in Taiwan, holding US passports, know not a word

of Mandarin, but they tell people they are from Taiwan. In the American-curriculum schools they learn that the president's name is Obama. It's funny that when we travel people always ask us, "where are you from?" Out of the four of us there are usually three answers: Hong Kong, Taiwan, USA. I can only say that we have been blessed for having lived in so many places, exposed to so many cultures, and learned to have compassion for all.
